Sarah Jane Edwards was born at Redruth, Cornwall, England, in 1862. Her father, Thomas, a copper miner, died when she was eight days old. At age ten, Sarah and her mother, Elizabeth, emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia, on board City of Adelaide in 1873. Also on board was Elizabeth's brother, William Nancarrow, with his wife and his seven children.

Days after arrival in Adelaide Elizabeth died of Typhoid and the orphaned Sarah lived with her uncle and his family. At the age of 25 Sarah married Joseph Sando, whose father and grandfather had also originated from Redruth, Cornwall. They had eleven children, one of whom died in infancy.

Sarah died at Adelaide, in 1947 age 85, leaving 10 children and 28 grandchildren.
