Three main sources have been used for determining the names of passengers on the 1874 voyage:

  1. List of Emigrants embarked on board the City of Adelaide from Plymouth - June 1874[1] - this does not show any Cabin Passengers (i.e. First Class passengers).
  2. Certificate of Arrival[1] - this appears to only cover those passengers whose passage was sponsored by the South Australian Government.
  3. South Australian Register[2] - a newspaper article dated the day after arrival which lists all passengers.

There were noted discrepancies between the newspaper article and the other two sources.

When the City of Adelaide left Plymouth, we believe that there were at least 282 pasengers on board comprised of 28 full-fee paying passengers, and 254 assisted-migrants. The official tallies suggests that there were 257 emmigrants on board.

The South Australian Register report[2] also lists three additional passengers that were not in the official lists. Ann Gurry, 17, and John Eths, 23 were listed in the newspaper as arriving in South Australia, and Alinda Phillips, 5, was listed amongst those that died. These three are included in our tally of 254 passengers but may not have been included in the official tally of 257 souls. There may be another three or six passengers unaccounted for.

List of Emigrants

The official tally of assisted migrants on the City of Adelaide signed by Thomas F Smith - Despatching Officer, showed 257 souls (equivalent to 222 statute adults) and was summarised as follows:

Category No
Married men 34
Married women 34
Single men 75
Single women 52
Boys between 1 & 12 y.o. 20
Girls between 1 and 12 y.o. 34
Infants under 1 y.o. 8
Total 257

The List also gave the following breakdown of the types of fares for these 257 migrants:

Passage English Scottish Irish 'Foreigners' Total
Colonial Passage Certificate (CPC) holders 54 23 31 2 100
Full Paid Colonial Passage Certificate holders 4 4
UK Assisted Passage (UKAP) 83 23 19 3 128
UK full paid 4 4
UK free passage (the Matron) 1 1
Totals 146 46 60 5 257

The List of Emigrants also shows eight 'Devitt and Moore' passengers shown but does not include the first class passengers such as, for example, the Campbell, Mackenzie, and Wilcox families. These eight 'Devitt and Moore' passengers might be the eight shown as being full fare paying in the List of Emigrants. However, we already have 254 out of the 257 migrants accounted for without including these eight.

The newspaper report[2] lists the Dunk Family as being Cabin Passengers but does not list the other five 'Devitt and Moore Passengers'. The newspaper report also infers that infant Ada Dunk was amongst the arrivals at Port Adelaide, although it is certain that she died during the voyage. As 21 year old Arthur Dunk has his trade listed as a builder, it seems unlikely they the Dunk Family were in the First Class Saloon.

We assume that the eight passengers titled 'Devitt and Moore Passengers' were emigrants who travelled steerage class and paid their own way and were not included in the official lists.

Certificate of Arrival

The Certificate of Arrival[1] signed by L Bowen. summarises the following passenger numbers:

Category No
Adults embarked 195
Children under 14 embarked 54
Children under 1 embarked 8
Sub-Total 257
One male child born on voyage 1
Adults died -3
Children under 14 died -2
Infants died -1
Total landed in Adelaide 252

It therefore seems likely that we are missing three or six passenger names. The passengers below are listed with their age and occupation and any classification/notes information found on the actual certificate lists.

Observations

1. The Sydney Morning Herald[3] quotes an article in the Wallaroo Times (provided below) that tells of a schooner called Mayflower that had to put into Wallaroo on Friday, August 28th, 1874. It had been heading from Port Broughton to Port Adelaide, but been driven back up the Gulf by a strong south-west gale and had lost the mate overboard. The man's name is given as Richard and his age as 32. It also indicated that his wife was a passenger on the City of Adelaide who had come to South Australia to be with him.

The Mayflower man overboard story was brifely reported in several newspapers prior to the Sydney Morning Herald article. Some newspapers reported that the man's first name was "Richard"[3][4][5] Other newspapers reported that the man's first name was "Charles".[6][7] It appears that at least one journalist has jumped to the wrong conclusion and taken the name Charles from another Burton couple whose names are seen on the City of Adelaide passenger list.

It would not be possible for the passenger, Charles Burton, to have come off the stranded clipper, travel to Port Broughton, set sail in a schooner in a gale as the mate, and subsequently be lost. The evidence is reasonably solid that Richard Burton, 32, was at sea on the schooner Mayflower on its way to Port Adelaide, and the schooner was upset by the same run of bad weather which had caused his wife's ship to be run aground.

It is sad to ponder whether Richard, in Port Broughton around the 25th August, had received word by telegraph of the arrival of Isabella, at Port Adelaide on the City of Adelaide, and whether that may have contributed to the schooner being caught in the gale on their way to Port Adelaide and Richard being lost overboard.

2. Newspaper report advertised unemployed married immigrants, per City of Adelaide, were available as follows: One general blacksmith, one bootmaker, one wheelwright, one bricklayer, and one mason's laborer.[8]

3. Some of the immigrants who arrived by the City of Adelaide appear to have not considered it desirable to give this colony a fair trial, a dozen of them having proceeded on Tuesday by the Aldinga to Melbourne.[9]

4. But the last casualty is in some respects the most serious of all. During the storm which raged all along the coast on Sunday night lost, the City of Adelaide, just arrived from London broke from her cable, and was driven almost on to the beach between Glenelg and the Semaphore. So great was the force of the gale, that although the vessel was deeply laden she was driven into about 4ft of water within a couple of hundred yards of the shore. There she still lies embedded in sand to the depth of some 6ft. During yesterday the sea was very rough, and no communication could be had with the beach, but steamers were sent round from the Semaphore, and arrangements were made for bringing off the passengers today. There are on board about 300 Government immigrants, besides a considerable number of other passengers, all of whom were thrown into the greatest consternation by the misadventure to the ship. There are eight cases of scarlet fever reported, and there have been seven deaths during the voyage. There is not the least danger of the vessel breaking up, but before sho can be floated she will have to be discharged and dismantled. The Pakwan, from London, narrowly escaped meeting a similar fate as the City of Adelaide, but she managed to sheer off from shore in time. The gales of late have been exceptionally severe, and news of further shipping disasters along the coast is apprehended.[10]

Births and Deaths During Voyage

Sadly, during the voyage, an outbreak of Scarlet Fever took the lives of several young passengers. The ship's doctor, Dr. W.M. Campbell, supplied a list to the newspaper[2] that shows seven passenger deaths during the voyage. There was another baby "born dead". In the Diary of James McLauchlan, he describes a baby being born in the same hour that a nine-month old infant died on the 18th June 1874. The diary does not mention the baby being born dead, and so it is believed that the two references refer to two different births.

The Certificate of Arrival only showed six deaths during the voyage and one birth - a boy. As the Certificate of Arrival only includes the tally of passengers sponsored by the South Australian Government, it would not have included the death of another nine-month old infant, Ada Dunk, who died on the 4th August. Ada's death was also mentioned in the diary where James McLauchlan says that Ada was christened by some the flower of the ship.
