On the 25th July 1867 the City of Adelaide began its voyage to South Australia under the command of Captain John Bruce.

One of the passengers, F.A. Eldelstone, kept a diary during the 1867 voyage in which he frequently recorded the latitude and longitude of the City of Adelaide as they sailed from London, via Plymouth, to Adelaide. The diary includes the emotional story of the transfer at sea of the sick wife of the Norwegian captain of another ship.
