The names 'Dr and Mrs S. Orby Carey' appear in South Australian newspaper passenger lists of City of Adelaide arrivals in Adelaide in October 1867.
Samuel Orby Carey was baptised in Co. Tipperary, Ireland in 1840. He was the youngest son of Newport, Co. Tipperary doctor Langer Carey (~1799-1866) and his wife Margaret (~1794-1869). Samuel married Anna Du Bourdieu (~1839-1865) in Dublin on 19 October 1861. After graduating in medicine from Trinity College Dublin, he and his wife and baby daughter travelled to Adelaide in 1863. Samuel set up his medical practice in Angaston, about 50 miles north-east of Adelaide where in 1865 his second daughter was born and his wife died soon afterwards. Returning to Ireland, he married Marian Louisa Eagle in Dublin on 4 May 1867. Marian, born in Dublin about 1844, was the eldest daughter of Dublin commercial agent and merchant George Eagle (~1804-1858) and his wife Marian Annette (~1812-1886).
Samuel and Marian left Ireland in June 1867. They sailed First Class (Saloon) from London for Adelaide per City of Adelaide in July. Samuel seems to have been the only surgeon on board as evidenced by his attending the dying Mrs Opdahl, the wife of the captain of the Lina which had hailed the City of Adelaide on 11 August. Fellow passenger Mr F. A. Edelston’s diary of the voyage makes numerous references to Dr Carey and his wife, including accounts of rat-hunting in their cabin and the Doctor’s ability to catch birds. Mrs Carey promised to sing for the passengers and was unwell for some days in August.
Upon arrival in Adelaide, Samuel immediately announced the re-commencement of his medical practice in the local papers, accompanied by glowing testimonials from colleagues in Dublin and the following from his fellow City of Adelaide passengers.
To S. Orby Carey, Esq., M.D., Surgeon on board the ship City of Adelaide, October 12, 1867. Dear Sir— We the undersigned passengers in the ship City of Adelaide feel much pleasure in expressing how highly we regard the professional abilities and general character evinced by you during the passage. Samuel's third (and Marian’s only) daughter was born in Angaston in May 1867. Samuel’s health deteriorated and the family of five plus Samuel’s sister departed Adelaide for London in November 1872.
Samuel Orby Carey MD LRCSI died at Weston-super-Mare, Somerset on 21 January 1877 aged 36.
Probably from not long after her return to Britain, Marian had been living with her well-off sister in Llandaff on the outskirts of Cardiff, Wales. On 25 September 1890 in London, Marian married her sister's father-in-law, wealthy coal owner and widower James Harvey Insole (1821-1901). For the next 15 years Marian was mistress of Ely Court, Llandaff and played a role in Cardiff society functions as well as church and charity work. Widowed again in 1901, she married Lt-Col William Andrew Aitchison (1843-1915, late 69th Regiment) in London on 31 August 1905. Marian was widowed for a third time in 1915. By 1919, she had moved to London.
Marian Louisa Eagle/Carey/Insole/Aitchison died in London on 15 January 1937 aged 92 and was buried in Llandaff, Wales.
