Mr F. A. Edelsten is named in South Australian newspaper arrival lists as a First Class (Saloon) passenger who sailed from London to Adelaide in 1867 on board the City of Adelaide. He kept a diary of the voyage.
Frederick Alexander Edelsten was born in Edgbaston, Warwickshire on 29 July 1848. Pin manufacturer Peter Edelsten (~1815-1891) and his wife Jane (~1818-1901) had a large family of at least 7 girls and two boys, of which Frederick was the fourth child and eldest son. Frederick had his 19th birthday on the day the City left Plymouth for Adelaide.
In 1871 Frederick purchased property in Howard Springs, NT which remained in his family for over 100 years (Edelsten Road runs to the property and is named after him).
Frederick had returned to England by 1876 where he married Maria Morgan (on 5 October 1876 at Waltham Cross. They had two sons and a daughter. In 1877 his occupation was given as Clerk and in 1878 as Mercantile Clerk.
In 1881 and living in Hackney, London his occupation was given as Australian Merchant. He employed two domestic servants. Frederick died at The Elms, Forty-hill, Enfield, England on 17 December 1915 aged 67.[1]
Note
Numerous spelling variations of Frederick's surname occur in records associated with the voyage but "Edelsten" is used consistently in birth, marriage, death and other official records.
