Carey Family - F73
In an advertisement in the South Australia Register on Wednesday 23 October 1867[1], a letter was published:
"To S. Orby Carey, Esq., M.D., Surgeon on board the ship City of Adelaide, October 12, 1867. Dear Sir— We the undersigned passengers in the ship City of Adelaide feel much pleasure in expressing how highly we regard the professional abilities and general character evinced by you during the passage. Your unremitting attention in Mrs. Opdahl's extraordinary and intricate case won our admiration, and satisfied us that you will do your utmost in the hour of need. "With best wishes for your success and future happiness, We are, yours sincerely, F. A. Edelsten, John Fidge, R. T. Foale, T. S. Lang, Samuel C. Pearson, G. M. Perry, E. S. Perry, George Prince, H. A. Prince, H. G. Prince, W. Sandover, M. B. Sandover, John Brewster, G. G. Todd, Harriett Tuck, J. F. Wells, A. E. Lowry, Robert Brewster, John Bruce (master), Ed. Robins (chief mate), E. Watts (2nd mate), Alex. Bruce (3rd mate)
It is believed that Dr. S. Orby Carey was a passenger travelling with is wife. There appears to be no other surgeon on board during the voyage as evidenced by Dr. Orby Carey attending to the dying Mrs. Obdahl/Opdahl.
