Miss Dover's first name appears as Janetta on one letter of thanks (that appeared in several newspapers), and as Linetta on another letter of thanks (obviously a transcription difficulty). The name Linetta is assumed to be the error and is discounted. The name Linetta could not be found for any girl on any website and it was discarded, but Janetta appears as a first name a surprising number of times.
Miss Dover does not appear to have become a South Australian. No Janetta Dover appears in any of the Birth/Christening, Marriage or Death records in SA or in the UK. The 'best-fit' to be found in any of the records is Janet Dover who was christened in Edinburgh, Scotland in October 1847. There is no evidence of her subsequent marriage or death in Scotland, and she would have been in the age range 16-21 when the voyage started. There is no evidence of her subsequent marriage or death in South Australia however.
A Miss Dover was one of the passengers on the steamship Coorong that departed from Adelaide on 23 February 1864 for Hobson's Bay (Williamstown, Victoria).[1] Perhaps Miss Dover was merely 'in transit' in Adelaide and her final destination was Melbourne.
