Death of an Old Resident

An old and much respected resident of this district in the person of Mrs. Thursa Finch passed away suddenly at her home on Sunday morning. She rose as usual and attended to the feeding of her poultry and then went into break fast with her grand daughter. Miss Dora Finch who resided with her. The deceased appeared to be in her usual spirits, remarked to her grand daughter that she did not feel as well as on the previous Sunday and did not feel like going to church. She had only eaten a few monthfuls of food when she fell forward off her chair. Thinking that she had gone into a fit, Miss Finch ran across to a neighbour's house and on returning found that she was dead, the cause of death being heart failure. Mrs Finch was born in Devonshire on 10th March, 1833. She was married on 15th April. 1857, to Mr William Finch. About 1870 Mr Finch decided to try his luck in Australia, but he left his wife at home. He was out here a couple of years, and then Mrs Finch came out, arrived in 1872 in the ship City of Adelaide. She was accompanied by her two boys, William and George. Previous to coming to Australia, Mr Finch was engaged in the trawling business. He came to the Burra straight away and worked for his father, who had been out several years previously. A few years later they went to World's End and took up land, where they remained until retiring from farming, then came to reside in Burra. Mr Finch died about six years ago. Mrs Finch was extremely active for her advanced age and walked about a good deal. She was a member of the Kooringa Methodist Church and when the weather permitted she was generally present at the morning service. Sunday was the 60th anniversary of her wedding day. Three sons survive, Messrs William, of Kooringa, George and Samuel of World's End. There were also three daughters, but they died in infancy. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon, the Rev. A.J. Finch officiated and the arrangements were carried out by C. J. Pearce & Son.
