Samuel Orby Carey was born in Churchfield Co. Tipperary, Ireland on 9 May 1841. He was the youngest son of Langer Carey (~1799-1866, physician) and his wife Margaret Anna (~1794-1869).[1] Samuel (aged 20) married Anna Dubourdieu (1834-1865) in Dublin on 19 October 1861. In August 1863, accompanied by his wife and baby daughter, Samuel sailed to Adelaide as surgeon on the Irene - coincidentally with David Bruce (Master) and his son John Bruce (Chief Mate and about Samuel's age) who would both later captain the City of Adelaide. Arriving in November 1863, Samuel (22) set up his general medical practice in Angaston, about 50 miles north-east of Adelaide where in August 1865 his second daughter was born and his wife died three weeks later.
Samuel decided 'to leave the colony for a time'. Samuel (24) sailed from Adelaide to London via Cape of Good Hope in January 1866 as medical officer onboard the City of Adelaide, with the father and son Bruce team now in charge of this vessel (Samuel is not listed in Adelaide newspaper passenger lists or, apparently, the crew list for this voyage).
Returning to Ireland, Samuel obtained licentiates in medicine, midwifery and surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. Samuel (25) married Marian Louisa Eagle (~23) in Dublin on 4 May 1867. Marian, born in Dublin about 1844, was the eldest daughter of Dublin commercial agent and merchant George Eagle (~1804-1858) and his wife Marian Annette (~1812-1886).
Samuel (26) and Marian (~23) left Ireland in June 1867. They sailed First Class (Saloon) from London for Adelaide per City of Adelaide, John Bruce master, in July. Samuel again acted as ship's surgeon and attended the dying Mrs Opdahl, the wife of the captain of the Lina which had hailed the City of Adelaide while in the Atlantic off west Africa on 11 August. Fellow passenger Mr F. A. Edelsten kept a diary of the voyage which makes numerous references to 'Dr Carey' and his wife, including accounts of rat-hunting in their cabin, the Doctor's ability to catch birds, and his drinking champagne with the Captain.
